A Beginner’s Guide to Keeping Ornamental Shrimp

Ornamental shrimp, such as Neocaridina (Cherry Shrimp) and Caridina species, have taken the aquarium world by storm. They are peaceful, fascinating to watch, and serve as excellent cleanup crews.

Ideal Water Conditions

Shrimp are sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry.

  • Temperature: Keep it steady around 20°C – 25°C.

  • Copper Warning: Ensure all medications and plant fertilizers are completely copper-free, as copper is lethal to invertebrates.

  • Stability: Focus on maintaining stable parameters rather than chasing specific numbers.

Tank Setup and Biofilm

  • MOSS AND PLANTS: Java Moss and dense foliage give shrimplets places to hide and graze.

  • Sponge Filters: Always use a sponge filter or air-driven filter to prevent baby shrimp from getting sucked into the intake.

  • Biofilm: Allow your tank to mature before adding shrimp so they have natural biofilm and algae to feed on.
